Incredible theory! Are you sure you're not a developer?
Personally I think that when FF14 comes out, many people will not know what to do. Stay in the world you know and love or move on to the new!
I personally will love to see what 14 is and will pay, but in the same time not abandon 11. But for many people that can choose 1 and only 1. I think will stay on 11, as starting from zero is never fun. I am hoping SE has thought more on this, as it may be a repeat off EverQuest 1 > 2. Where many people stayed some moved, and some quit all together.
My opinions are mixed, but what is sure is, unless SE offers something to push people to move, many will not. Especially people in 11 with relic's or other things that have taken month's too years or dedication to the game.

I agree. Most of my friends say they will not be going to FF 14 if they can't transfer their data over.

Of course, there are those who like to remain in the past and hold their dear precious character close to their heart. Understandable, considering the amount of time we put into FFXI to get anywhere in the story. The transition from Halo 2 to Halo 3 is probably a prime example. People didn't immediately leave, but most did because they're ready for progression. And now if you try to get a game running on Halo 2... well, good luck. I don't see FFXI lasting a long time after XIV comes out because of one great factor. Seeking for party can suck already. What will happen when half the population is gone? Eventually you'll have to let that character and those experiences go be it because of XIV or the fact that servers will close.
