Since Final Fantasy XIV's announcement, it's been speculated whether or not the game was to be the "Rapture" project that Square had been rumoured to be working on and that had been announced as their next online endeavour in 2005.

We now know that Final Fantasy XIV is indeed Rapture, although the Rapture name is not going to be used for the title. The decisions for the name change were pretty clear: they wanted fans to feel that their next online installment was worthy of the Final Fantasy title, much like the originally planned "Final Fantasy Online" became Final Fantasy XI prior to release.
