The development team said that when they approached Yoshitaka Amano (the highly reputed artist of all the previous Final Fantasy series's logo artwork) to create the logo for Final Fantasy XIV, they told him that weapons would play a very important part in the growth of characters in Final Fantasy XIV and that the concept of a "wheel of adventurers" should be considered.

The concept is simple: if you have a group of people with their weapons drawn, they are facing a direction. If everyone faces a different direction to the person next to them, they circle out to create a circle formation. Although the front is guarded by their own weapon, their backs are exposed and they rely on their comrades to cover their backs. This imagery of comradery is one of the key focuses on the Final Fantasy 14 battle system, although precisely what it means is currently unknown.
