The development team have said that they've taken inspiration from other MMORPG's such as World of Warcraft, Age of Conan and Warhammer Online. Whilst they insist they do look at these games and generate ideas, the biggest majority of their decisions are based on what players of Final Fantasy XI feedback to them.

With much luck, the specific parts of Final Fantasy XI that let down the overall gameplay will be address for Final Fantasy 14. Square Enix have recently said that they will use what they've learnt developing Final Fantasy XI and use it to improve Final Fantasy XIV.
