Final Fantasy 14 will be set in an original world called Haiderin. The previously assumed world name, Eorzea, is actually only referring to a region in the world. This opens the game to development of future expansions.

There were some original similarities implied by the teaser trailer and early imagery, although these have been disbanded by the development team since. The races featured in the Final Fantasy 14 Collage were also cited as similar to the races of Final Fantasy XI, although these rumours have also since been disbanded.

On the subject of this similarity, the producer, Hiromichi Tanaka, said "The reason we made them similar in Final Fantasy XI was so that players who have been playing it and liked the character can choose a similar type of race."
