When the Final Fantasy 14 trailer was first shown at E3 this year, the presentation opened with a chocobo running through the screen. This sight was met with rapturous applause from the audience, having realised this signalled that a Final Fantasy title was on its way.

Chocobos have become a staple part of the Final Fantasy series and it was recently revealed that they'll make a recurring appearance in Final Fantasy XIV. Although it was cited they'd appear, it was made clear that they wouldn't be in the usual guise we'd recognise them.

The principal behind Chocobos has always been that they're the steeds of the Final Fantasy series, the creatures that, in most games, characters ride. In Final Fantasy XIV, however, it's been revealed they will not be steeds this time round and that they will serve a more detailed, storyline related purpose.
